“Sacred Harp is one of the most extraordinary and thrilling sounds of the South.  With many settlers unable to read words, let alone music a form of sol-fa was devised.  Called “Shape-note” notation and based on four shapes, a circle, a square, a diamond and a triangle, it was reckoned to be easy to learn and swept the country like wildfire throughout the 19th century.  It was – and still is – one of the most vigorous forms of music to emerge from America.  The words of many of the hymns were set to folk tunes that were familiar to people in the rural South.”
